A reminder about our upcoming meeting …

Our first meeting of 2012 will on Saturday, January 7th at starting at 11am.

We are not having a traditional Roc Day (distaff day) celebration on this day but if you have a basketful or so of things to sell, feel free bring them along.

For those interested in learning how to knit ‘toe up’ socks or how to knit socks with an ‘after thought’ heel, help will be available. Bring your own supplies and a pattern if you have one for these types of socks or any other types and we’ll get you going.

Members are reminded to bring their own lunch if they are coming before the 1pm meeting, none will be provided. We will however have coffee and tea as usual.

Also… it is time for memberships to be renewed. Please make sure to update your members cards when renewing..

The Anniversary meeting will start at 11am for guild members, visitors and shoppers are welcomed to join us at 1pm. This allows members and vendors time to set up and for us to share a special luncheon at noon.

Benjamin Patterson Inn Whingblinger – we were in a good location but need a bit more room to include flax prep. Weather was very nice. Pat used the Guild wheel to teach; Theresa and Lydia were weaving upstairs, on short notice.

Farm City Day – October 8 at Chemung County Fairgrounds. This is a Cooperative Extension program. Not sure where we will be located – possibly Commercial building or Cabin. New York State requires mega liability insurance of vendors and exhibitors, covered by Coop. Ext.

September 3, 2011 meeting

Past events:
-Chemung County Fair comments: items entered are in competition with each other.
-Last meeting’s report is on the Guild’s FaceBook page, and on the Guild blog as well. We can add photos, and links to interesting or related sites.
-Strong Kids/Safe Kids – they now have an “arts and culture” tent.

Future Events:
-September 10 – Benjamin Patterson Inn’s Whingblinger, tent next to the cabin.
-September 17 – Finger Lakes Fiber Festival at Hemlock, NY, at the Livingston County fairgrounds.
-Senior Notebook segment from Chemung County Fair, will air in late September or early October.
-Chemung County Fair –
-Basket Weaving – October 22nd at 9:30 AM. Participants will be making a potato basket. Cost: $40. Pre-registration and pre-payment required, by October meeting.
-Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool Festival – October 15-16
-November meeting – 11/5 – anniversary meeting with lunch and vendors. Committees: Food & Kitchen (Judy B), Vendors (Eve), Publicity – (?). Lunch at 11:30. Open to others at 1:30? Other guilds, knitting groups, family and friends.
-Art at the Armory, Rochester. Fine arts show, 2nd weekend in November.

Notes from last meeting on August 6, 2011

1. Review of July Activities
   1. Open House at Painted Post Alpacas
   2. Meg Lowman Treetops Camp at Tanglewood: eight Guild members participated, “thank-you” note from the staff.
   3. Dyeing day was canceled
   4. Chemung Count Fair: eight Guild members participated on opening day
   5. Troy Fair: at least four members demonstrated. For next year, anyone who has a Mary Stepney fleece may submit whatever they make from it; if it gets a blue ribbon they win another Stepney fleece.
2. Upcoming Events:
   1. Strong Kids, Safe Kids – August 20, 10AM-3PM at Chemung Fairgrounds. They are going to have a “Culture and Arts” tent to show kids what kinds of interesting and different things they can learn to do.
   2. Whingblinger: September 10, 10AM-4PM. This year we will be located by the log cabin (not by the gasoline engines), along with the flax processing.
   3. Sheep & Wool Festival at Hemlock: September 17 (10AM-5P) and 18 (10AM-4PM).

      2. For workshops, go to http://www.gvhg.org/fest/workshops.html and click on "Class descriptions, times and costs," and on "Registration Form for 2011" to register.
   4. Mumford: Genesee Country Village and Museum, http://www.gcv.org/. The museum holds special events on many weekends, and it was felt that a weekday might be less crowded. Still working on a date.
   5. Farm-City Day, October 8 at Chemung Fairgrounds. Further discussion at the September meeting.
   6. Basket Workshop, to make a "potato basket." Suggested dates were October 22 and 29, with registration and payment due October 1. More information at the September meeting.
3. Meetings
   1. September 3: 1-4pm at the church. .
   2. October 1: 1-PM at the church.
   3. November 5: Anniversary and Sale. More information at September & October meetings.
4. Other:
   1. It was suggested that we have a table available at each meeting for "free" items – fibers, skeins, etc., that you no longer need or want. Please note: if you bring items for this table, and they have not been taken by the time you leave, please take them back with you.
   2. Don’t forget to bring non-perishable food items for the local food pantry, and/or cash for the Community Kitchen.

Meetings will be at the church from 1 – 4pm unless otherwise announced.

For the April meeting we are asking members to bring projects they need help with, be it spinning, sewing, knitting, whatever! Other members will be available for one-to-one help with problem solving.

One of our guild members brought some guests to the March meeting … They were lots of fun!

At our April meeting we held a felting workshop. Below is Pat with her completed felted piece.

A reminder:
The guild meets from 11am – 4pm. This was expanded from our original 1pm starting time to provide some extra one to one time for working on projects. The business/discussion part of the meeting still starts around 1pm. The guild provides Coffee, Tea, and water.. Members may bring a snack to share but each member is responsible for their own lunch if they come early.

The business meeting will be held early due to the workshop timing (I think it was stated to be at 11am)….If you are not participating in the workshop – you should still plan on going to guildJ!

What you will be learning

This will be a felt making workshop. You will learn both wet and dry felting techniques in order to achieve the above ( see fiber picture attached)!

Materials

Sandi does charge a materials fee. This will cover the use of her drum carder for individuals to make their own batts for their artwork. She will also bring batts as well as all the colored wool for the project, felting needles and foam rubber pieces for the needle felting. She always brings extra of everything just in case a needle breaks, etc. All the material supplies will be almost unlimited.

Fee

To cover these materials, this fee will be $10.00 per person.

Be Prepared

The only thing you are requested to bring is a couple of old towels and scissors.

Bring a favorite magazine picture or photo you may want to reproduce. Sandi brings many photos, so if you are not sure, there will be photos available from Sandi to work from.
